In C++, a pointer is a variable that holds the memory address of another variable. Pointers allow direct manipulation of memory, making them a powerful and flexible tool for programming.

To create a pointer in C++, we use the ‘*’ symbol to indicate that the variable is a pointer, and we assign the memory address of another variable to it. For example, if we have a variable ‘x’ with a value of 10, we can create a pointer to as follows:

int x = 10;

int* ptr = &x;

In this example, ptr is a pointer variable that holds the memory address of ‘x’. The & operator is used to get the address of ‘x’.

We can use the pointer to access the value of ‘x’ by dereferencing it using the ‘*’ operator:

cout << *ptr << endl;  // Output: 10

This will print the value of x (which is 10) to the console.

Pointers are particularly useful in situations where we want to pass a large amount of data to a function without copying it. By passing a pointer to the data, we can avoid the overhead of copying the data and make the program more efficient.

However, pointers can also be tricky to work with, as they require careful memory management to avoid errors such as memory leaks or accessing invalid memory addresses. It’s important to always initialize pointers to a valid address and to avoid dereferencing null pointers or pointers that have been deallocated.

15. What is a NULL pointer in C?

A pointer that doesn’t point anywhere is called a NULL pointer. Example:- int *p=NULL;
