Variations between IBM AS400 and Android

IBM AS400:

The AS/400 formally renamed the “IBM iSeries,” however still it referred as AS/400 – may be a mid range server designed for small businesses and departments in massive enterprises and currently redesigned so that it will work well in distributed networks with web applications. AS/400 uses the PowerPC microprocessor with its reduced instruction set computer technology.  It’s operating system is called the OS/400.

IBM AS400 Training

Benefits of IBM AS400:

Stability: The AS400 is still recognized today and maintenance problems associated with its use are rare. According to information gathered by IBM. AS/400 users experience on average less than the 5.1 hours of unavailability per year(by excluding the scheduled maintenance).

Security: The AS/400 environment itself  has never been infected with the same kind of viruses that affect the other systems. Today, server security is more critical than ever and protection afforded by the power systems is a very effective defense against attacks. Object based design has been at the heart of power systems since the first generation and today remains the key to IT security since viruses often penetrate into systems in the form of information and not objects.

Versatility: The versatility of IBM power systems servers is often little known. These servers can be configured as needed; it can be used only for AS/400 environments or include the other environments. For instance, each server contains by default an FTP.

Android:

Android is a mobile operating system(OS) developed by Google. It is used by many smartphones and tablets. The Android operating system (OS) is based on the Linux kernel. Unlike Apple’s iOS, Android is open source, meaning developers can modify and customize the operating system for each phone. Android is based on the Linux kernel long-term support branch. It’s user interface is based on direct-manipulation, meaning it was designed for touch screen devices, responding to swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse pinching as well as having a virtual keyboard.

Benefits of Android:

Customizable UI: Google has always focused on making its user Interface customizable and this permits more opportunities for businesses and developers to get the best out of the UI and make their apps ever more engaging.

Customization: Android provides more options for customization based on the needs  of  your business, and also changing trends in the market. Developers can simple tweak the existing apps and make them more contemporary in their features and functionality.

Multi-Network Distribution: Apart from Google Play the official app marketplace, Android apps are also distributed through several third-party marketplaces. This permits you to reach out to a larger section of the audience and increase your market penetration.

Hardware Compatible: Continuing with the Initial point, Android apps run on devices from different manufacturers with varied hardware configurations. This ensures that they provide great performance to the users irrespective of the device they use.

Key Differences between IBM AS400 and Android:

Parameter IBM AS400 Android
Merits AS400 is very much stable. We can reboot our machine twice or thrice a day, but we cannot do the same with the servers. That’s where the stability of AS400 lies. It can go for a long run without any rebooting Widgets help you to access a variety of the settings very quickly and easily. Android phones offer you to access several apps easily and free. This is one of the best benefits of Android phones. There are thousands of apps in the play store which are free to download
Demerits AS400 is highly expensive. The hardware to run AS400 prices were significantly higher than the other platforms. RPG developers for AS400 are rarely available in the market for higher charges compared to the programming language developers like JAVA One of the major drawbacks of Android phones that large apps/games are forced to close while which is annoying. As Android uses lots of data because of the processing in the background it also takes battery and it reduces the battery performance
Performance To offer a common metric that applies across the entire product line, the AS/400 system uses a set of relative performance measurements derived from the commercial processing workload(CPW) on this AS/400 system. CPW is representative of the commercial applications, particularly those that do significant database processing in conjunction with journaling and commitment control It responds quickly to the user Interaction

Conclusion:

Both are unique in their own way. The JAR file has existed since the inception of IBM Toolbox for Java, as one might guess from the name similar to IBM AS/400. It is the tried-and-true mechanism for remotely accessing your IBM i, and it serves as the backbone for many IBM products, including IBM Navigator for i, IBM i Access Client Solutions, and IBM i Access for the web. It is by far the most popular and well-known deliverable, and it’s name has often become synonymous with the toolbox itself. However, this JAR file is not compatible with the runtime environments of modern Android devices.
